Message from Mr. Porter

Dear Parents and John Tuck Family Members,

We are back at it in full swing and it feels great! I cannot tell you how energized we are to have our students back in person to begin the year. It has made all the difference and we are seeing students lock in and thrive in this model. Along with the typical beginning of the year endeavors like, picture day, the Tornado Tour and so forth, we have also stepped in with Fall reading and math assessments to get detailed information about each child’s current strengths and areas for growth. If you are interested in this detailed info, I encourage you to reach out to your child’s classroom teacher to inquire and they will be happy to share with you.

My message this month is about working together to develop a strong partnership between home and school as it is the first and most vital ingredient to ensuring success for every child. Every staff member at our school is committed to empowering our students to meet their full potential even if it is in a model that is none of our’s first choice! We understand that with time, support, effective effort and life choices, all of our students will move forward and grow their social, emotional and academic intelligence.

Our commitments remain unchanged and are outlined below:

As a school we will:

  • Provide all students a rigorous and engaging learning experience.

  • Provide all students with equal access to all learning opportunities.

  • Provide additional support that each child needs to be successful.

  • Ensure all students are positively connected to school.

  • Teach students about how to learn and how to grow their social, emotional and academic intelligence.

As parents/guardians, in order to ensure social, emotional and academic success, your commitment may include:

  • Staying informed (through Parent Square, our school newsletter, teacher newsletters, daily communication folders, our website, and direct communications with staff via email and/or phone calls).

  • Getting involved in activities, committees, conferences, student performances and family engagement events.

  • Ensuring your child is at school (physical or distance learning) for the entire day every day except for in cases of emergency or illness.

  • Being directly involved in your student(s)’ educational experiences. They need you more than anyone else in this world in order to be successful!

  • Making sure you gather the facts from adults at school when hearing something from your child or others that might raise concerns.

As students, in order to ensure academic success you must: (Parents, please sit down and review these with your child. It will make for rich dialogue! Post these on your fridge and engage your children in conversations about them throughout the year.)

  • Participate in school every day, on time, well rested and with a healthy breakfast (all students at John Tuck get breakfast and lunch for free). Consistent practice over time is how people learn best.

  • Give 100% positive energy and effort every day you are in school. Smart is NOT something you are - it is something you become through EFFORT!

  • Be safe, respectful, responsible and a learner. Always be academically curious. We are community of learners at John Tuck!

  • Cultivate your own growth! Take full advantage of the activities, after school opportunities, self manager program and all the enrichment opportunities we offer at John Tuck in conjunction with our community partners.

  • Expect to be successful and engaged every day! Take advantage of your time here and the opportunity to grow in academics, the arts, friendships, and after school activities.

  • When you have difficulty lean in and work harder; when you make mistakes, use it as an opportunity to grow and learn!

  • Believe in yourself - you have the capacity to do GREAT things!

I am tremendously proud and honored to be your principal and cannot believe that this is my tenth year serving the John Tuck community! I am 100% invested in the success of all children at John Tuck. I believe we offer every child the highest quality education you can find within the resources we have available. Through thoughtful planning, dedicated, creative and collaborative efforts, and an unwavering commitment to our students through setbacks and challenges, our staff is committed to providing a learning environment at John Tuck in which students thrive. As always, I welcome your involvement and feedback as we press on toward the goal of helping every child believe in and access his or her unlimited potential.

Yours in Service,

Dusty Porter

Message from Jill Jorgensen-School Counselor

Welcome back John Tuck Families!

I am so excited to be entering a new school year with your students!

My name is Jill Jorgensen and I have the great pleasure of being the School Counselor at John Tuck Elementary. I look forward to working with you and your student(s), and to helping your student(s) succeed to meet their own personal goals for this school year and beyond. Our school mission is to provide a positive environment and challenging learning opportunities to support student achievement and produce lifelong learners.

Counseling activities at John Tuck Elementary are diverse and include class lessons, group counseling, brief individual counseling, conflict mediation, and family consultation. Many of these activities will focus on helping students learn ways to build positive social skills, gain confidence in their ability to interact with others, and learn ways to deal with problems and conflicts constructively.

This year we are excited to be utilizing Character Strong Curriculum. For the month of September we are focussing on the character traits of Kindness and Respect. Find out more about Character Strong here

We are fortunate to have an Oregon State University-Cascades graduate student, Jordyn Calloway, interning with us. She will be working with many of our students throughout the year, providing support through one on one meetings, small groups and large group lessons.

I am so grateful for the opportunity to serve your students! If you would like to talk or have ANY questions,  I would love to hear from you.

NURSE DAPHNE
High School Nurse's Office - Carthage Central School District

Dear Parents/Guardians,

I would like to extend a warm welcome to all students and their parents. I am looking forward to working with you and your children at John Tuck elementary school. I would like to share the following important information with you and ask for your cooperation in providing the necessary documentation and communication regarding your child in order to ensure his/her health and safety.

HEALTH CONCERNS: Please inform your school nurse of any severe allergies, surgeries, accidents, or new health problems that occurred during the summer months or which may occur during the school year.  If your child has a medical condition (e.g. allergy, asthma, diabetes or seizures), this information will be shared with his/her teacher and other staff members working with your child.

IMMUNIZATIONS:  In accordance with the Redmond School Policy and Oregon State Law, documentation of immunizations are required for all students.  Oregon State Law and Regulations provides for exclusion of students from school if immunizations are not up to date. There are two situations in which children who are not appropriately immunized may be admitted to school:  1.) a medical exemption is allowed if a physician submits documentation attesting that an immunization is medically contraindicated; and 2.) a nonmedical exemption  is allowed if a parent or guardian completes the online exemption course through the Oregon Health Authority. If you have an insurance issue please contact the nurse for assistance and direction.

MEDICATIONS:  Per school district policy, no child is to take or carry prescription or over the counter medication to school, with the exception of Insulin, an Epi Pen, or an inhaler.  A physician's order must accompany all medications to be given during the school day. If a student must receive medications in school (including students in need of emergency medications such as Epi Pen, inhalers, Diastat) both parental permission and a physician order prior to administering medication is required. A prescription label is acceptable in lieu of an doctor’s order.  A Parent Authorization for Medication Form is to be completed and signed by the parent. This form along with the prescribed medication in its original container must be brought to school by the parent/guardian. Ask your pharmacist to divide your child's medication into 2 bottles, each with its own label so that one can be kept at home and one can be kept at the school. Any medication not picked up by the parent/guardian at the end of the school year will be disposed of, it will not carry over to the next year.

Students with ASTHMA, DIABETES, SEIZURES, AND LIFE THREATENING ALLERGIES:  Emergency Action Plans and doctors’ orders must be submitted to the nurse each year at the start of school. We ask parents of these students to sign a Release of Information form to improve communication between the school and the student’s medical provider.

CONCUSSIONS/INJURIES/SURGERIES:  If your child sustains a concussion, an injury or had surgery a doctor’s note is required to excuse the student from Physical Education class and sport activities. The nurses’ office along with guidance and teachers will work together if educational accommodations are needed. Physician clearance must be completed in order to resume physical and cognitive activities. All doctor notes for concussion/injury/surgery should be given to the nurse by the student in order for her to assess and speak to the student directly on his/her return to school.

OSU Nutrition:
Sharlene Chiong will be the Nutrition Educator for OSU Extension this school year. OSU Extension Deschutes County delivers hands on nutrition education primarily to first and second grade classes, physical activity breaks for all grade levels, and is involved in school events. Their aim is to help make the healthy choice the easy choice where students gain a better understanding of ways to eat more nutritious foods and learn practical skills that students can carry beyond the classroom.

Miss Sharlene is excited to share her passions about all things food and is looking forward to walking with students on their learning journey! On her free time, she enjoys hiking, paddle boarding, listening to audiobooks, cooking, or experimenting with crafts.

October 9-13 is National School Lunch Week! School lunches offer healthy foods to help students be better learners. Say to your student, “choose many colorful foods” and “try something new!” Use MyPlate to help you talk about eating balanced meals at home and at school.
